This is your chance to learn in 6 steps how to achieve CONSISTENCY IN COFFEE ROASTING
Specialty coffee is delicious, we all know that. What people don’t know is the amount of processes in the entire coffee production chain that provide all this quality to the product. And it’s always hard to be consistent in these processes.
Today we talk about one of them: the roasting. Within this context, an important factor that often makes this process complex is the consistency. You must agree that there is nothing more frustrating than repeating the purchase of a particular coffee and realizing that there have been changes in the roasting from one order to another. For that not to happen, there are 6 steps to consistency in coffee roasting:
1) Check Bean moisture before roasting
Content and Pounds We need to check the type and weight of the coffee, for that we could se how the content would change during the roasting
2) Have set the final bean temperature (Target)
If we want consistency, the roasting conditions needs to be pre-established. Any difference in final temperature completely changes the final roasting result.
3) Note the time “First crack” was achieved
Once the roaster hears the sound of the first crack, he or she will know that this bean is beginning to reach the stage of light roast. So, this moment is critical and its time is an important information for a consistent roast.
4) Total time to finish the roast
Having this information enables you to standardize your process, so that it can be repeated with more convergent results.
5) Profile used in the roasting
Tracking your roasting profile is what you’ll attest if you were able to be consistent with that roasting compared to the previous one.
6) Check and document the results of color scan
At this moment it is being compared the roasting result, while in profile we testify the method, here we check if the result is convergent to the previous roasters.
Finally, by ensuring that the above steps are followed you may have standardized coffee lots so that customers are not negatively surprised and have a unique experience while tasting quality coffee.
